Come Get Your Role Models!

“Your New Role Models” that’s what the newest cover of VIBE magazine says. It depicts “reality” stars on the front cover, scantily clad and oozing sex appeal.

Black women are already portrayed as having an attitude and being rude, catty and obnoxious. Reality TV shows such as the ones these “ladies” are on do nothing but add fuel to that stereotypical fire. I believe that anyone who has a large audience has some kind of responsibility to society to be a “good” role model.

But for half a million dollars I’m guessing standards can be shifted and morals hidden to make for “good tv.”  When is enough going to be enough? What won’t we be willing to do for money?

Why go to college and work hard when we can bare it all, act a fool and get paid near millions?

I know some friends who watch “reality tv” and I’m not here to judge. I just want to know what do we tell our daughters?  Nieces? Cousins? God-Daughters? It’s okay to watch and be entertained but you better not act like this?! It’s okay and funny when other people are fighting in clubs over men but you better not do it?! It’s okay to watch this in our home but don’t you dare act that way toward your sisters and friends!? We need to practice what we preach. WE are their greatest examples and role models.

It may seem like harmless fun but it has bigger implications than you may think.

What happened to the days when respect was better than attention?

Come get your role models…because I don’t want ‘em!

Heart Check

Published May 23, 2012 by ladyantoinette2

Today as I meditated on Luke 12:35-48 I began to feel God probing me…slightly nudging me…to acknowledge that I needed a heart check this morning. Am I really ready for the Lord’s return? Am I waiting in hopeful expectation for it to happen any day? Am I as excited about His Coming as I am an upcoming date or the season return of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal? Sadly, I must admit that I am not. I don’t feel it’s possible to live in a state of perpetual excitement. We all have our good and bad days. Although, I do feel that the Lord’s pending return should never be far from my mind and a spark of excitement and expectation should always surface when I think of it. I can get so trapped and focused with the business of the day that I forget to remember. Make sense?

But what does waiting and ready for the Lord’s pending return look like? How can I apply that to my everyday life?

Well, people who are ready for their Lord’s return are (1) not hypocritical but sincere (Luke 12:1 “Meanwhile, the crowds grew until thousands were milling about and stepping on each other. Jesus turned first to his disciples and warned them, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees—their hypocrisy.”), (2) not fearful but ready to witness (Luke 12:4-9 “Dear friends, don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot do any more to you after that. But I’ll tell you whom to fear. Fear God, who has the power to kill you and then throw you into hell. Yes, he’s the one to fear. What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. I tell you the truth, everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, the Son of Manwill also acknowledge in the presence of God’s angels. But anyone who denies me here on earth will be denied before God’s angels.”), (3) are not worried but trusting (Luke 12:25-26 “ Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things?”), (4) not greedy but generous (Luke 12:34 “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”), and (5) not lazy but diligent (Luke 12:37 “The servants who are ready and waiting for his return will be rewarded. I tell you the truth, he himself will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them as they sit and eat!”).

May your life be more like Christ’s so that when He comes, you will be ready to greet Him joyfully.

God  bless you.Image

Love Me Back to Normal #NationalPoetryMonth

Published April 15, 2012 by ladyantoinette2

This thing that I am about to ask you
it may not be fair
But
I need you to
Love me back to normal

Past the hurt and the pain
Past the loss and the gain

I need you to love me so I can love me so we can be we
Us

I need you to love me beyond everything you’ve ever thought you felt

Love beyond all reason
Throughout all four seasons
When the winds of hell are raging
When my face is aging

Love me back to normal
Love me past the sea
Underneath the willow tree
Make love to my mind
Captivate my soul
With secrets untold
Yet unfolded unto me

Love me back to normal
Not quite to sanity
But not yet touching lunacy
Love me from your beginning to
My end
Round and round
And
Back again

Love me when all roads are dead ends
Love me like you’ll never breathe again

Love me back to normal
Because I’m in between the place
In between the space
of finding you
And you finding me

We just have to be

This may not be fair to ask of you

But I need you to love me

Beyond me

Beyond my faults

Beyond my thoughts

I need to be the one that you need while needing you completely

Love me back to normal

To the place that we can be one forever

Love

Me

Back

To

Normal

I’ll see you there

The Little Things

Published March 14, 2012 by ladyantoinette2

As I was on the train this morning, setting dates in my calendar and jotting down notes on my “To Do” list, I made a note of some very important ending dates. The last day of the group I run with the kids is May 2 and so is the last day of my internship. The last day that my son will be 8 years old is May 5th when the big boy turns 9 years old. Next, the last day of my final semester as an MSW student is May 15th. Lastly, the final chapter of my academic career (close friends tease me and call me a “Professional Student” lol) will be May 31st when I graduate with my Master’s Degree in Social Work.

This has been a long time coming but as I reflected on the big milestones, I started thinking about the “little things.” Like God granting me the strength, the energy, the determination to get up everyday to complete the tasks He set for me. Like all the people who have supported me while I was on this journey emotionally, financially and spiritually. Like all the friends who understood when I had to miss a birthday party or could never hang out. Like my mom, who has been more of a support than she will ever know. Like my son, who is SO good, SO understanding and SO smart. These “little things” are what enabled me to achieve these milestones. I couldn’t do any of this alone. I am so humbled. So grateful. My heart is filled with emotion this morning. As I close this chapter and move on to the next I will not forget to take a moment of pause and reflect on the “little things” because they mean so much.

What “little things” are you grateful to have in your life today?

Monday Morning Inspiration

Published March 12, 2012 by ladyantoinette2

This morning as I read my “Mornings with Jesus” devotional I was struck by one line in it:

The only reliable thing in this life is Jesus.

If we take a moment to really consider what that means…what it means for our lives…we’d know that nothing in this world should be able to shake us. Keep in mind that no illness, no travesty, no devastation is too big for our God. He is the Rock. Our Rock. To God be the glory. You have the victory in all circumstances if you rest in Him and your faith; your all is in Him.

Have a blessed day!

Nappy Anniversary to Me!!!!

Published January 15, 2012 by ladyantoinette2

WOW! A year has finally arrived! It has been one heck of a year too, I can tell you that! In going natural I’ve found so many blogs, other naturals, products, etc. This is a whole community – one that even has their own language! If you understand “I’m going to pre-poo with EVOO, then cowash for a WnG” then you know what I mean! LOL! Anyway, in my year these are the TOP 10 things I’ve learned.

10. Conditioner is my best friend.

9. There is a whole community that has their own language dedicated to natural hair.

8. Women who go natural are just so nice.

7. My name is Aisha and I am a product junkie.

6. Black hair grows!

5. Research is very important. I’ve become an expert on ingredients and I know what my hair likes and what it doesn’t.

4. Of all the advice out there no one is a better expert on your hair than YOU are.

3. I love my color but I regret coloring it. I miss the extra softness of my hair.

2. My hair LOVES water.

1. I love my hair. Never really thought about it until I stopped chemically damaging it. She’s a full head of hair, who loves long DC’s while cleaning and a great movie or two while being twisted up. She enjoys coconut oil and being massaged. She even enjoys bananas and avocado! This is one cool chick. I’m glad I met her.

Momma would be so proud!

What’s one thing you could do TODAY to get you where you want to be in life?

Think about it and share in the comments below. :-)

Day 7 & 8: Create a Life Map & Rest, Reflect and Comment

Published January 8, 2012 by ladyantoinette2

Day 7: Create a Life Map

Today’s challenge was to create a life map using areas we reflected on in our Day 2 of the challenge “Life Assessment.” This is where I think about where I want my life to go. This will be fun! Here goes:

Lifestyle: Big house (enough for all the fam to be cozy), big kitchen where I can experiment with new dishes and making my own hair products, living someplace WARM, Regular travel

Work: Working in a hospital setting helping patients to optimize their health by making better decisions, advocating on patient’s behalf

Education: Master’s Degree, photography class

Finances: No debt, good credit score and 6 months worth of savings

Health: Regular check ups, eating healthy and maintaining my vegetarian diet

Family: Regular time spent with family members. Together for holidays.

Relationships: Married with baby on the way and maintaining my friendships

Day 8: Reflection

The most important thing I learned about myself this week is that with a little determination I can get anything done.

My favorite exercise this week was the life map. It was so fun to envision where I want to be.

I probably struggled the most on the mission statement. I’ve never had to write one about my life.
